Find a local Meetup group

While the Organizer Meetup groups are the obvious first choice, you might discover that an Organizer Meetup group hasn't started up near you yet. Not to worry. If you can't join an Organizer Meetup group, you can always talk to the Organizer of any nearby group.

To talk to an Organizer in your town, the first step is to find a local Meetup group. Your best bet is to check out 'Find a Meetup' and use the 'Browse Cities' option to see a list of upcoming Meetups in your area.

From here, scan the list of Meetups, and click the ones that sound interesting. Since you're looking for advice, pick a Meetup group that's met a couple of times already. From the Meetup group's Calendar page, click on some past meetings to see what their gatherings have been like. Pay attention to Meetup groups in topics similar to those in which you're interested. When you find a good Meetup group, join it!

Contact the Organizer

Once you've joined an interesting local Meetup group, introduce yourself to the Organizer. Send them an email by going to the Meetup group's Our Home page and clicking "Contact Me" under the Organizer's photo.

Since you want to learn more about being an Organizer, ask them questions. A message to an Organizer might look something like this:

Hi there!

I'm Katie, and I just joined your Meetup group. I'm thinking about organizing my own Meetup group, and I was wondering if I could talk to you about what it's like being an Organizer. I'm especially interested in knowing what it was like when you were first starting out, and how you got your Meetup group going.

If you'd like to talk about it, feel free to send me an email. See you at the next Meetup!

More than likely, the Organizer will be happy to talk about their experiences. It's a great way to learn what being an Org is like!

Attend their Meetup

You'll learn a lot by emailing an Organizer. But you'll learn even more by attending their Meetups. That's where the action happens, and where you'll see what it really means to be an Organizer. Plus, you'll be able to talk to the Organizer in person!

Once you've joined a Meetup group, make note of when the next Meetup is happening and make a point to attend. When the Meetup rolls around, get there on time or even early so you can introduce yourself to the Organizer and ask them more questions. Then, when things get started, sit back and watch! Enjoy yourself and get some ideas!

After the Meetup, send the Organizer an email and ask any follow-up questions you might have, and be sure to thank them for their help!
