Looking for an easy way to communicate with your members and keep them active? Look no further than your Meetup Mailing List!

How Meetup Mailing Lists work

It's simple, really:

  • Every Meetup group is assigned its own email address. For example, if your Meetup's URL is puggles.meetup.com/1, then the email address for your Meetup's Mailing List is puggles-1@meetup.com.

  • Members of your Meetup can send emails to that address from their regular email client like they would any other email.

  • Emails sent to the mailing list address get distributed to everyone on the mailing list.

  • Emails sent to the mailing list are also archived in the Messages section of your Meetup group's web site.

Who can use Meetup Mailing Lists

As an Organizer, you control who can send messages to your Meetup's Mailing List. Here are your options:

  • Allow all members to send messages: With this setting, all members of the Meetup group can email the mailing list.

  • Allow all members to send messages, but I'll approve messages first: This is a moderated setting. Your Meetup members can email the mailing list, but you, the Organizer, can approve or deny the messages before they get sent out.

  • Turn mailing list off: If you turn off your Meetup's Mailing List, only you and your Assistant Organizers can email your Meetup group.

To choose the setting you want, just go to the Settings tab in your "Organizer Help and Tools" section.

Why use Mailings Lists

Mailing lists are a great way to keep your members posted about upcoming Meetup events and other news about your Meetup. Unlike message boards, where members have to go to the site to see and answer messages, Mailing Lists allow members to respond to messages directly from their regular email client. It's a fast and easy way to both keep members active and share information.

Organizers use mailings lists to:

  • Organize Meetup events
  • If you want member input when figuring out the logistics for your next event, send a message to your mailing list. It's a great way to ask for potential dates, venues, arrange for members to bring snacks, get transportation to the event - you name it. Since members can respond to the mailing list directly, you get answers and input fast.

  • Get discussions going
  • See an article or hear of an event that your members would like? Send it to the mailing list and get them talking about it! With mailing lists, members can have a back and forth conversation about their topic of interest and their Meetup group. Mailing lists also help members communicate and get to know one another. They get a sense of who they'll meet at the Meetups and are more likely to attend!

So, if you want to keep your members tuned into the site, be sure to make use of your Meetup Mailing List. A conversation with your Meetup is just an email away.
