Using the Web To Tell Your Meetup Story (2007)

by Scott Heiferman (CEO of Meetup; Organizer of NY Tech Meetup)

Greetings Meetup Organizers Everywhere!

Here at Meetup HQ, we love hearing stories of Meetups making a difference for people.

I heard one recently, but I didn't hear about it on the Meetup website. I saw it on MySpace. It's the Queens Autism Meetup, and the Organizer, Chelise, wrote about it on her MySpace blog. You've got to read her story.

This got me thinking: How can Meetup Organizers use other websites to tell their stories and promote their Meetups? Here are some ideas:

  1. Display your Meetup on your MySpace or Facebook (if you use those sites). There's a special Meetup badge for MySpace, and we just launched a Meetup application on Facebook!
  2. Make a video story about your Meetup and post it on YouTube. See our Video Stories preview.
  3. Advertise your Meetup. Place ads on Google to promote your Meetup. They're pretty cheap.
  4. Write about your Meetup where people will be interested, or start a blog using Blogger or TypePad.
  5. List your Meetup on Craigslist or other city sites popular in your area. Try our Craigslist posting tool.

Maybe your members can take on some of these ideas. Ask them!

Do it for the people that haven't heard about your Meetup yet!
